Rainbow Ridge Opal Mine
We’ve talked a bit about some of the great opal mining you can do in the area. The two mines we’ve discussed so far were the Royal Peacock Opal Mines and the Bonanza Opal Mines. Before the season ends, we wanted to make sure to let you know something about the other major opal mine in the area, the Rainbow Ridge Opal Mine. Silver State RV Park is a good place to stay while you focus on area activities!
Rainbow Ridge Opal Mine
You’ll find the Rainbow Ridge Opal Mine about 135 miles north of Winnemucca, so it is a bit of a journey, but worth it. Opal mining began in the area around 1907, shortly after the discovery of opals.
The Rainbow Ridge Opal Mine has been in production for over one hundred years and has been owned and operated by the same family since 1949. One of the most famous opals, the Roebling, was mined from Rainbow Ridge and is located at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
To Do
The mine is open from 8 am – 4 pm Friday through Tuesday. The season is ending and if you want to do some digging this year, you’ll need to get out there by September 15th. You can do tailings digging which is $100 per person per day.
These are areas that have been mined previously. If you’ve never dug before, tailings are a good place to get started. Some tailings are 50 years old, while others may be from the day before. If you’re an experienced digger, you can always do the virgin ground loads, but this will run you $700 for one to two adults. You must be at the site by 8 am and digging requires reservations.
