The Bonanza Opal Mines
A few months back, we talked about some of the fun that you can have visiting the Royal Peacock Opal Mine while you’re staying at Silver State RV Park. The Bonanza Opal Mine is another well-known opal mine in the area. In fact, because of our unique geological history, Bonanza is among the variety of opal mining spots near Winnemucca.
Bonanza Opal Mines
The Bonanza Opal Mine is located in Virgin Valley about two hours away. Heading there from Winnemucca, you’ll head north on Highway 95, then swing west until you get to the opal mining area. Make sure Bonanza is open, because they are closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Digging for Opals
The opal fields here produce a wide variety of precious black, crystal, white, fire, and lemon opal. In fact, the black fire opal is the official gemstone of Nevada. Since the mines are dry, rocky soil, there’s as much raking as digging for these attractive stones.
You’re free to roam their tailings looking for those fiery gems. Once you’ve had your fill of looking for opals, you can also do some fishing in local ponds or at the Big Spring Reservoir.
If you’re feeling extra active, you can hike up the 1000 Creek Gorge, Hell Canyon, or to the top of Gooch Table. There are also a number of hot springs in the area you can visit and some you can actually soak in, like Bog Hot Springs, Alvord Desert Hot Springs, or Hart Mountain Hot Springs.
